DescriptionConserve valuable PCI-Express slot space, alleviate bottlenecks, and increase uptime with Gigabit performance in multi-mode fiber-optic networks. This family of PCI-Express cards offer 1, 2 or 4 independent fiber optic Gigabit ethernet ports per slot. Small Tree Communications is the first and only company to support multi-port fiber optic networking for the Apple Mac computers and OS X. These cards also come with drivers for Linux and Windows systems. The inherent advantages of fiber optic cabling over copper are longer cable lengths without repeaters and both the total lack of RF emissions from the optical cable as well as complete resistance of the cable to outside RF and electro-magnetic interference.
Multi-port cards allow you to expand the network connectivity of your systems. Unlike the Power Mac G4's built in ethernet port, these cards support jumbo frames which means higher data transfer rates. Use these cards to get an immediate performance increase on large transfers when connecting to other network devices that support jumbo frames or to simply connect to more networks. When used in conjunction with the Mac OS 10.4 (and later) built-in link aggregation software (for Mac OS 10.3 and earlier use Small Tree's 802.3ad load balancing software), these cards provide increased network bandwidth, transparent load balancing among the ports, and transparent fail over if one or more ports or cables become disabled. |
